The C-Word

An Announcement From Gravesham Pride

The coronavirus (COVID-19) is presenting a new challenge for everyone and Gravesham Pride CIC is no exception.

Over the past few weeks we have been monitoring the emerging situation and reviewing our plans daily by following the latest advice from the World Health Organisation and the UK government.

In light of the recommendations made yesterday, Gravesham Pride CIC feel that inline with our duty of care to keep the community safe, it would be irresponsible for us to ignore the potential risks from holding our planned public fundraisers.

With this in mind, it is with a very heavy heart that we have decided to postpone the 80ʼs Disco on the 21st March and the Quiz on the 26th March until further notice.

We realise this is disappointing however, we hope that you understand our reasoning behind this decision.

For refunds, we would ask that you do not contact committee members directly and e-mail contact@graveshampride.org instead.

Please bare in mind that we are a non-profit community interest company operated entirely by volunteers who are not only organising Pride and managing our own lives but also facing the same levels of uncertainty and anxiety as everyone else during this challenging time therefore, there may be a slight delay in responses.

WHAT ABOUT PRIDE 2020?

Our priority has always been to deliver a safe and successful event but we will admit that the coronavirus (COVID-19) has presented us with new challenges.

Whilst the current situation regarding COVID-19 is concerning, with the 15th August 2020 being several months away Gravesham Pride CIC have decided not to cancel the event and we will continue with the project. However, we have already begun contingency planning.

We will continue working with local authorities and monitoring the situation regularly by following the latest advice from the World Health Organisation and the UK government. We will then implement appropriate plans according to their guidelines and keep the community informed.

WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT COVID 19?

As representatives of the LGBTQI+ community, Gravesham Pride CIC understand that many of us are already isolated and this difficult time will add to an already vulnerable community.
With this in mind;

  • We have allocated members of our team to volunteer with the Gravesham COVID-19 Mutual Aid Group with the main priorities being to assist those who are elderly, disabled and/or immune compromised during this uncertain time.
  • We have allocated members of our team to create interactive online content which will alleviate boredom and social isolation.
  • We are working on a service to connect isolators with registered mental health first aiders.

ANY ADVICE?

Gravesham Pride CIC are not health professionals and therefore we cannot offer advice regarding tackling coronavirus (COVID-19).

However, as human beings we urge you to keep up to date with the latest advice from the World Health Organisation and the UK government via reputable sources rather than relying upon the media alone.

Before Pulse Nightclub – The UpStairs Lounge: The U.S.A.’s…

The 24th of June in 1973 was a Sunday. For New Orleans’ gay community, it was the last day of national Pride Weekend, as well as the fourth anniversary of 1969’s Stonewall uprising. You couldn’t really have an open celebration of those events — in ’73, anti-gay slurs, discrimination, and even violence were still as common as sin — but the revelers had few concerns. They had their own gathering spots in the sweltering city, places where people tended to leave them be, including a second-floor bar on the corner of Iberville and Chartres Street called the UpStairs Lounge.
