Filmmaker behind last year’s £50 viral Christmas ad is…

Brace yourselves, because this powerful new short-film about a gay couple in a long-distance relationship will destroy LGBT+ people everywhere this Christmas.

The film, called Made For You, was created by Phil Beastall of Anzara Video Production, who made a nation cry last year when his 2014 short-film Love is a Gift – which was made for just £50 – went viral.

Beastall’s new film tells the story of a gay couple in a long-distance relationship who must keep in touch using Facetime. The film explores how the couple share romantic moments even when they are not together.

As Christmas approaches, the men are clearly heartbroken not to be together – but then, a mysterious gift under the tree makes one half of the couple stop dead in his tracks.

His boyfriend then walks into the room, surprising his partner, and gets down on one knee to propose.

Beastall said they wanted to tell a story about “love and companionship” in this year’s festive film.

“These guys met online and found themselves unable to stop talking to each other because they had so much in common – they were made for each other,” he told PinkNews.

“The fact that they are two men is merely coincidental.”

He continued: “We wanted to highlight that you are free to choose (or not choose) who you fall in love with regardless of gender, ethnicity and society’s expectations.”

The filmmaker also said he hopes the video will help people to focus their attentions on their loved ones this Christmas.

Made For You comes a year after Beastall’s 2014 film Love is a Gift went viral online. The film was made for just £50, but many people sharing it felt that it was better than the John Lewis Christmas adverts.

The heart-wrenching film followed a man as he counted down to Christmas – but not so he could open presents.

Instead, he listened to a tape his mother had recorded for him before she died. The tape was the last of many she had left behind for him to listen to on Christmas morning over the course of several years.

Speaking to Bored Panda about that film, Beastall said: “Ultimately I wanted people to take a moment to realise how lucky we are to be here and remind themselves that although life can be really tough, we’re not defined by our careers or materialism. Family comes first and it’s important we look after each other. So although it’s not a true story, it’s one I hope hits home.”

I'm a child of the section 28 generation who came out in my teens at an all girls school... as you can image that did not turn out so well! Experiencing first hand the damage it can do when people are placed in an environment where LGBTQ+ matters are totally taboo I made a promise to myself to never to stay quiet and ashamed again. Although I am an activist, educator and rebel at heart, first and foremost I will always be a mother and wife.
