Emergency Escape!
A little update from the website team we’d like to tell you about.
We are aware that there might be times when visitors to our website could have an urgent need to exit quickly so we’ve put together a snippet of code that will close the current browser tab and open another to either your default Home page or it will connect to the weather service.
Desktop users who don’t want anyone to see that they’re looking at our site can escape in an emergency by hitting the Esc key – which is on the top left on any keyboard and we’ll vanish from your screen in a flash.
clicking on the Back button should reveal anything because the open tab was forced to close and the open tab hasn’t been anywhere yet.
Unfortunately not all browsers behave the same and any future updates could stop the code from doing what it’s supposed to so we’d recommend trying it out regularly so you know it’s going to do what you expect.
A good strategy would be to have a second browser window open behind the one you’re using with another website pre-loaded. Closing the window you’re using can be done quickly and the window behind won’t leave it looking like you’re sitting in front of an empty desktop.
That still leaves your browser history intact and we can’t erase that for you so if you’re concerned about someone looking at the sites you’ve been visiting you can delete your history in your browser settings or preferences menu.
Modern browsers now have an “Incognito” or Private Browsing Mode. This link has instruction on how to use Private browsing Mode in almost every browser on almost any device out there so you should be able to find instructions on using yours there.
Now, back to our little script. We’ll be making it work from a button soon so that tablet and mobile users have a similar ‘get-out’ option. We don’t like the idea that you might ever have to use it but we think it’s worth having it there just in case. Try it now, so you know it’s there and that you can trust that it’ll work.
